The fire started around midnight in the basement of a house on Chappaqua Road in the Lake Carmel section of Kent, said Lake Carmel Fire Chief T.J. Donohue.

The family, including two adults and two children, were able to escape safely as firefighters arrived on the scene, the chief said.

Due to no fire hydrants in the area, firefighters had to truck in water and pulled hoses to battle the two-alarm blaze that totaled the home, Donohue said.

More than 40 firefighters from Brewster, Carmel, Kent, Patterson, and Putnam Valley assisted at the scene, the chief said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but foul play is not suspected, Donohue said.

The family will be staying with other family members for the meantime, he added.
